Kind of Work
This is beginning-level paraprofessional library work in one or more specialized library fields.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)
- Answers reference questions for patrons and performs readers' advisory services; assists and guides patrons in the use of electronic resources.
- Assists patrons in the selection and location of books and other library materials.
- Maintains various indices; prepares bulletin boards, exhibits and displays.
- Maintains book inventory.
- Oversees circulation activities; assists in training new employees.
- Compiles daily, monthly and special statistical reports; conducts correspondence with branch libraries and library patrons.
- Assists the public in selection and use of audio-visual materials and equipment.
- Assists in assigning and monitoring the work of clerical staff.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Attainment of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university in liberal arts or library science and preferably a minimum of one year experience in paraprofessional library work.
Essential Requirements of the Work
- Some knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials and practices.
- Some knowledge of books and authors, periodicals and reference media.
- Ability to use automated library systems and other forms of technology.
- Ability to conduct on-line searching and use other office automation tools.
- Ability to oversee the work of clerical staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons.
Distinguishing Features of the Work
An employee in this class performs duties requiring the application of standard library techniques and procedures and typical areas of assignment include book circulation, cataloging, reference and research. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian or a Library Associate II through review and coordination of plans and programs and supervision may be exercised over clerical personnel. The incumbent may be required to work shifts.
